Back again to play yet another table for Marvel Pinball (or Pinball FX 2 if you're on Xbox 360). This time around it’s Marvel’s Civil War for PS3 and PS Vita. The table revolves around the Earth-shattering Marvel Comics storyline, Civil War, in which the controversial Superhuman Registration Act pits Captain America and Iron Man against one another.

There’s not really a lot to say about this table, and not because it’s yet another pinball table for Marvel Pinball. I’ve reviewed a few tables for Pinball FX 2, and I’m generally quite surprised at how they manage to make them all feel like unique and interesting experiences, with different mechanics and solid storylines to engage the player. Unfortunately for Civil War, it really lacks a lot of these qualities. Really, it doesn’t feel like this digital pinball table is doing anything that a real pinball table couldn’t do, and that’s where this game comes up short. Where previous tables have given you the ability to move from one table to another within one theme, Civil War is pretty static, as far as I was able to tell. And there didn’t feel like much in the way of progression.

The one positive I will add, is that I enjoyed playing on the PS Vita, as the game seemed much more at home on the portable system than it does on the home console. Pinball is the kind of thing most people like to do in short spurts, and the Vita’s portability and high-fidelity add to that. Not to mention some of the cooler features, like being able to turn the handheld on it’s side to get a more classic, vertical look at the table.

At the end of the day, this entry in the Marvel Pinball / Pinball FX 2 line-up just doesn’t stack up against some of the more creative past installments.
