Passengers is one of those slow and brooding pressure cookers that bore the shit out of me, personally. This one was not the worst of the lot, but it isn’t a hot recommendation either. The cast does a decent job and features a couple names like Anne Hathaway, Clea Duvall, Dianne Wiest and David Morse who is always on his game whatever the weather. The direction is adept but the first hour is as boring as hell. Once you reach the hour mark however, there start to be questions that lead you along despite yourself. There are shades of conspiracy at work and all of a sudden you can see how this could fit in the thriller section at the video store.
SPOILER ALERT!
Now having given this movie a fair appraisal so far, there is no way to critique its biggest flaw without ruining the plot twist at the end. They’re all dead and they just don’t know it. Um, The Sixth Sense came out years ago and M. Night rocked this idea way better, so why bother?
So as a marginal rental for the weary nine to fiver looking to kill an hour and a half, you could do worse. You just can’t have high expectations.
