This is the oral history of the Queensbridge housing projects, but it’s told through the evolution of veteran emcee Tragedy. I don’t know if director Booker Sims set out to base his Queens’ Hip-Hop documentary on the life of the Intelligent Hoodlum, but he seems to have come to the conclusion, through various interviews with Queens residents, that Traj is the hometown hero; half thug, half self-aware brother. While the film covers most of Queens’ important contributors to the rap game, the majority just get to speak on Traj’s notoriety. Capone’s interview is filmed while he’s drunk, and with two glocks in one hand no less. Nas gets slighted when some little girls solemnly state he ain’t been seen in the hood since he shot his first video. And then to add insult to injury he gets called out by Green Lantern for runnin’ with Tragedy’s rap style. Ouch. Now, I gotta give props to the dramatisations illustrating Tragedy’s life, they could put Unsolved Mysteries to shame. A little more history on Queensbridge itself could have benefited the viewer but all in all, I gotta say, fitteds off to Booker T. (as Killa Sha calls him) for a job well done.
