Clarity of the future is impossible. The luminescent Jessica Biel on the big screen further clouds the mind. The truth is, every man could use a little clairvoyance to help them pull a woman like that. In the premonition driven Next, we follow magician Chris Johnson (Nicolas Cage) and his fight for destiny. Along the way Cage does the best Steven Segal I've seen in years as he pulls off the gruff, long haired, hunchback hero like it has never been done before. Nic's power here is the ability to see two minutes into his own future and the plot is based on the Philip K. Dick story The Golden Man. Unlike the book, the whole 'animal instinct' element in the movie seemed more like a glorified Spidey sense and its impact on the purported civility of modern man was negligible. Dick's original story involved a much more X-Men like plot with mutant characters battling for equality. Instead of an engaging visual wrestling match of scientific ethics, Next plays out more like Groundhog: Judgment Day. I think the Roots said it best: "The more things seem to come together, the more they just fall apart."
