Erykah Badu in Vancouver
Tuesday, June 10, 2008

On stage, Erykah Badu has almost a split personality. Hidden under a giant 'fro, one side of her character emerges big and beautiful, and the other side of her is straight up smooth, lyrical expressionism. With an ensemble to match, this tour is serious. I counted a dozen supporting band members and background singers and one local guest emcee. The performance was elaborate, well remixed and freshly spiked with cuts from her latest release, New Amerykah. At one point Ms. Badu brought out the drum machine/sampler and freaked a few beats, and later in the show there was even a flute guy. I thank good timing and a great doobie for the added enjoyment. I ended up running into friends with extra VIP seats that were ideal for watching Erykah love the Vancouver crowd. She ended up doing over an hour long set, and even a second show later that night!
