Justice w/ Diplo in Vancouver
Thursday, March 27, 2008

On a rainy Tuesday night in Vancouver, there normally isn't much to do. Last night though was an exception, as I was lucky enough to score a pass to the sold out MySpace Music Tour show featuring Justice and wasn't disappointed. Walking up to the front of the historic Commodore Ballroom, I could tell it would be a Tuesday to remember. It was already about 9:30 pm and the doors had opened up at 8, so showing up fashionably late, I figured I could walk right in. It wasn't the case though as people were still lined up 50 deep waiting to get in. Thankfully though the bouncers must have recognized my gangster, or seen the Kashis and the line-up moved right along. Once inside, the atmosphere was definitely electric, and you could sense the hype surrounding the dynamic duo from France. The opening DJ set was starting to pop-off and I grabbed myself a Heineken before going to the top level of the club. There was a nice mix in attendance, from newly of-age party kids to old-school bar stars, a few b-boys and some goths thrown in to balance things out. The warm-up set by Diplo was wrapping up with some nice dancehall and I made my way back down to the dance floor, grabbed another beer or two and tried to secure a good spot to check the action. As the lights dimmed and the capacity crowd pushed it's way to the front of the stage, the curtains parted and there they stood. Atop an elevated platform behind the controls, flanked by their trademark pillars of Marshall speakers, Justice began a barrage that lasted over an hour. Taking tracks from their critically acclaimed first album †, then reworking them and twerking them over and beyond my expectations. The tag-team techno kingpins kept things pounding the whole time. The Parisians, who reside on Ed Banger records and made it into town for the second time in six months, did nothing buy reinforce their rep and kept the full house wildin' out. As they came out for their encore I was already ho-hollerin in the coat check line, but nonetheless it's safe to say it was a flawless display of how to hold it down.
