Killer Mike (Outkast protégé turned rap kaiju) and El Producto (former Company Flow lieutenant) returned to Vancouver as Run The Jewels and destroyed the packed house.
The sold out show saw the two creative minds bask in the immense local audience they have built up through successful solo careers. Their performance in Vancouver last year was no doubt, one of the best of the season. If you aren’t familiar with Mike and El’s work as Run The Jewels, expect high octane Hip-Hop. These BFAM (brothers from another mother) take it back to that Public Enemy and Schooly D energy, but with a 2013 sound. Ah, fuck it, just go download their free album and see for yourself:
The electronic beats moved well with the club atmosphere, and their ample lyrics were heavy on wit and politics. Run The Jewels are sticking up clubs across North America on an immense summer tour, and as far as I’m concerned Friday’s performance was an expert demonstration. To see Killer Mike hanging off the ceiling and looming over the audience was symbolic of his ideas as an entertainer…and cool as fuck.
Next time Killer Mike and El-P book a show in Vancouver, grab them tickets with the quickness!
