I found out about this show two days before at the 4/20 rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery. By 4/22 I had almost forgotten about it because I was still in a purple haze. A few hours before the show I get a message from Rakaa saying he put me on the guestlist. So, even though I was dehydrated with a splitting headache, I had to get my mind right and go to the show. So I rolled up a few cannons and headed to the show. Of course I showed up too early and had to sit through the local opening act. Regardless of the half empty venue, Dilated Peoples still got on stage and tore the roof off the motherfucker. Five years ago that place would have been packed but I guess the lack of a new group album and a poor show promotion was the reason for the small crowd. None of that mattered though as Evidence, Rakaa and Babu performed an endless run of gems from their catalog. Something about hearing, "I work the angles, sharp and precise / Dilated Peoples, so you better think twice" was like being in a time machine. It brought me back to the first time I saw Dilated perform over ten years ago at the Whiskey A-Go-Go down in LA. I'm pretty sure even Babu's solo routine was his signature one from back in the day off the old 'Beat Junkies Vol. 1' mixtape. Everyone in the building was waiting for them to perform 'Worse Comes To Worst' and of course they saved the best for last. It was a great way to end a great performance. Special thanks to Rakaa Iriscience for the invite.
