Matisyahu in Pemberton
Friday, August 1, 2008
print

If you were one of the few not up on Matisyahu you were probably looking sly eyed at the Lilloet stage during last weekends Pemberton Festival wondering to yourself: “Who’s the Amish dude?” An incredible musician, an uplifting live performer, Matisyahu (who is actually a devout Hasidic Jew) rocked the shit out of the stage along with his outstanding band for a super live set during the closeout day of Canada’s premiere party. Billed as a hybrid musician Matis rapped, chanted and sang in a slick reggae patois flair with nary a curse as the restless crowd erupted with each song. The positive messages in his rhymes were never overbearing as spirituality reigned supreme for nearly an hour. Each band member played an integral part on stage making the show that much more enjoyable with Matis playing the back quite a bit so his boys could shine. Matisyahu has a cult following and it’s only a matter of time before he is exposed to the masses on a grand scale. If Pemberton is akin to Canadian scholar Marshall McLuhan’s ‘global village’ then Matisyahu is proof positive that ‘the medium is the message’. Listen and learn.
