It's Just Begun: The Epic Journey of DJ Disco Wiz, Hip Hop's First Latino DJ

In all my years as a DJ/journalist I've never been this inspired by a book. The life story of Luis "DJ Disco Wiz" Cedeno is nothing short of remarkable. This should be prerequisite reading for anybody who has ever called themselves a Disc Jockey. Disco Wiz's story starts in the Boogie Down Bronx. Born in the '60s and raised in the '70s. In his early teenage years he started rocking turntables in the parks with his partner in crime Cassanova Fly. After a few years of paying dues they were getting recognized and respected by big name DJs like Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa. But Disco Wiz's DJ career was cut short when he was sent to prison for attempted murder at the age of seventeen. After surviving five years in the worst prisons in New York he was released. During the '80s he worked as a chef and a coke dealer. Life isn't easy for a ex-con especially when that life includes baby momma drama and drug and alcohol abuse. After years of being with women who didn't love him and used him, he finally found a great woman named Lizette who helped him turn his life around...only to be diagnosed with cancer. And not only Luis but also his wife Lizette! Both of them spent years battling cancer. Around every corner of this guy's life has been a battle and he's never given up. That's what makes this story so inspirational. After all his trials and tribulations he rediscovered his love for Hip-Hop in the form of spoken word poetry. Inspired by Saul Williams he decided to start writing poetry and this book. To end this review I'll quote one of his poems, "So tell me now. Can you answer this riddle? Never have so few, done so much for so little."
